About Kandy

Kandy is the capital of the Central Province in Sri Lanka. It is considered one of the major cities in the country. Being a mountain city, it has an attractive environment and pleasant weather all around the year. The elevation of the city is 447 m above sea level. The average annual temperature is 24.5 °C, and the average annual rainfall is around 2500 mm.

The city has a lengthy history. In the 14th century, King Sena Sammatha Wickramabahu chose Kandy as his capital. Kandy and the surrounding hill country were considered a sub-kingdom of Sri Lanka at the time. After the Portuguese captured Kotte kingdom in the 16th century, the Kandyan Kingdom became the country’s major Sinhala kingdom. In the 16th century, Kandy city was home to the Temple of the Tooth Relic, from which the King ruled the entire hill country. The Portuguese, Dutch, and British tried several times to capture the kingdom. But they failed due to the topographical advantage of the area. Later, the British successfully captured the Kandyan Kingdom in 1815, and the Sinhala Kingdom came to an end. When the British left Sri Lanka in 1948, they developed the Kandy-Colombo major route and other infrastructure facilities in the area.

Apart from those facts, Kandy is a fabulous place for travelers. There are so many fantastic spots to travel inside the city and outside the city. The area is superb for hikers and trekkers. Not only them, but it is also nice for cultural tours and sightseeing tours. The beauty of the city and its surrounding areas cannot be covered in a single day. As a result, spending two days in Kandy is a wise decision for any traveler.
